Asian Archery Championships: India win three gold medals in compound archery

With three golds, one silver and a bronze on the final day, India end the Asian Archery Championships with a total of 7 medals

India’s Parneet Kaur has been crowned as the Asian Champion. The 18-year old defeated compatriot Jyothi Surekha Vennam in an all-Indian Women’s individual compound archery final of the Asian Archery Championships on Thursday, 9th November 2023.

India won two more gold medals on the day in Women’s Compound Archery team event and Mixed Doubles compound archery event respectively.

In a closely fought Women’s individual final, both Jyothi Surekha and Parneet were tied 145-145. In the subsequent shootout, the latter managed to snatch the victory with the score at 9-8. This is Parneet’s first individual gold medal in the Asian Archery Championships.

Jyothi Surekha Vennam meanwhile failed to defend her gold medal in the individual event. However she, along with Parneet Kaur and Aditi Swami bagged the gold medal in the team event.

The trio defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chen Yi Hsuan, Huang I-Jou and Wang Lu-Yun 234-233. With this, the trio are now the reigning World Champion, Asian Games Champion as well as the Asian Champion. They are also No.1 in the world.

This is also India’s second gold medal in the Women’s compound team event at Asian Archery Championships. The last gold medal came in 2017. Jyothi Surekha was part of the side back then alongside Trisha Deb and Parveena.

In the Mixed Doubles compound event, Aditi Swami and Priyansh bagged the gold medal. The duo defeated Thailand’s Kanoknapus Kaewchomphu and Lertruangsilp Nawayut 156-151.

Abhishek Verma wins individual bronze in Asian Archery Championships

India’s Abhishek Verma settled for bronze medal in the Men’s individual compound event. He edged past South Korea’s Joo Jaehoon 147-146 in the bronze medal play-off. This is his second bronze medal in the tournament this year. Earlier he won the Men’s compound team bronze medal. His partners in the team event were Prathamesh Fuge and Priyansh.

With five medals on the final day, India ended the Asian Archery Championships 2023 campaign with seven medals in total. Apart from the Men’s copmpound archery bronze yesterday, the Women’s recurve archers also on bronze in the team event. However they failed to book a spot in the Olympics.
