Fifteen-year-olds are not supposed to create selection headaches for the Indian cricket team. They are supposed to be playing age-group cricket, learning their game and dreaming about international cricket from a distance. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is doing none of that.
After all, he is an anomaly. The Rajasthan Royals wonderkid is reportedly set to make his India debut during the upcoming T20I series against Ireland. If that happens in Belfast on June 26, he will become the youngest cricketer ever to represent India. The Sachin Tendulkar record is in huge danger, but even the ‘Little Master’ would root for Sooryavanshi’s impact in the Indian team now. As per TOI journalist Gaurav Gupta, Sooryavanshi will make his India debut in the opening T20I against Ireland on June 26 in Belfast after Cricket Ireland confirmed that the series will take place as per schedule.
Youngest India debutants in history ft. Tendulkar
| Player | Age at India Debut |
|---|---|
| Sachin Tendulkar | 16 years, 205 days |
| Parthiv Patel | 17 years, 153 days |
| Maninder Singh | 17 years, 222 days |
| Harbhajan Singh | 17 years, 288 days |
| Laxmi Ratan Shukla | 17 years, 320 days |
Born on March 27, 2011, Sooryavanshi will beat Tendulkar’s youngest debutant record as long as he makes his India debut by October 18, 2027. So, that’s unquestionable.
Will India drop Samson/Abhishek for Sooryavanshi?
But for Sooryavanshi to make his T20I debut, India would need to drop either of Sanju Samson or Abhishek Sharma, the two openers. Both of them were part of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. While Abhishek had an ordinary tournament, he’s still the number one ranked T20I batter with a huge ceiling. Samson, meanwhile, finished the season as the Player of the Tournament at T20 World Cup 2026. He even had a superb debut season with CSK. So, Gautam Gambhir would be in a tough spot.
Abhishek Sharma offers India a left-handed powerplay destroyer. So does Sooryavanshi. Samson gives India flexibility as an opener and wicketkeeper while also providing experience in a young batting group.
If the reports of Sooryavanshi playing are true, India will have to take a courageous decision. Or else, they can rest anyone of them in order to give Sooryavanshi the international exposure.
India’s squad for T20I series vs Ireland
Shreyas Iyer (C), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (WK), Ishan Kishan (WK), Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma (VC), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
A talent India simply cannot ignore anymore
Sooryavanshi’s call-up didn’t happen because of one IPL season. It happened because the teenager keeps making every level look too easy. He showed his signs at the IPL 2025 when he hammered a 35-ball century.
Then came the Under-19 World Cup, where he smashed 439 runs and hammered 175 in the final and was the Player of the Tournament. Then came IPL 2026, where he completely blew everyone away. While most youngsters dream of surviving against international bowlers, Sooryavanshi dismantled them.
Whether it is Jasprit Bumrah, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins or even Kagiso Rabada – Sooryavanshi took a toll against all world-class bowlers. His numbers still look ridiculous. 776 runs and easily won the Orange Cap. MVP award. 72 sixes.
And just when people thought the hype might cool down after the IPL, he produced another absurd innings. In the India A tri-series final against Sri Lanka A, Sooryavanshi blasted a 17-ball fifty, the fastest ever recorded in List-A cricket. He eventually smashed 94 off only 29 deliveries and was in touching distance of hammering the quickest List-A ton too.
If recent evidence is anything to go by, he won’t be satisfied with just making his debut. He’ll back himself to own the stage as well.
