The IPL Captains' meet took place on March 25 in Mumbai, where discussions on IPL rules and regulations took place.

The Impact Player rule at the Indian Premier League (IPL) isn’t gone yet. Three seasons in, it continues to divide dressing rooms, and that tension was once again evident at the IPL 2026 captains’ meet in Mumbai. While the league has embraced innovation over the years, this particular tweak still hasn’t found universal acceptance. And if the latest discussions are anything to go by, all the ten IPL captains want the rule to be removed from the league.

IPL 2026: Captains voice concerns, but BCCI holds firm

At the pre-season meeting held at the BCCI headquarters, a majority of captains reportedly expressed discomfort with the Impact Player rule. Once one of the senior-most skippers raised the issue, others quickly echoed similar concerns. That senior captain could either be KKR’s Ajinkya Rahane or Mumbai’s Hardik Pandya. Otherwise, all the other captains are fairly young.

The feedback wasn’t new. Previously, legends like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have shown their displeasure with the rule. As recently as two days ago, Delhi Capitals’ captain Axar Patel clearly said that he doesn’t like the rule. From questions around team balance to its long-term effect on player development, especially allrounders, the concerns have been building for a while now.

However, the BCCI and IPL officials made their stance clear. The rule, introduced in 2023, will stay in place at least until the 2027 season. Any review, if at all, will only happen after that cycle. The board perhaps sees monetary value in the rule as it allows more runs-filled games. T20 fans generally tend to watch high-scoring games more and thus the BCCI or broadcasters are in favour of the rule that just gives teams an extra batting option.

Why the Impact Player rule remains a talking point

At its core, the rule allows teams to swap a player during the match, effectively turning the contest into something closer to a 12 vs 12 battle rather than the traditional 11 vs 11.

Tactically, it has changed the way teams approach games. Sides now routinely start with an extra batter and later bring in a specialist bowler, or vice versa. While that adds flexibility, it has also diluted the role of allrounders, who are no longer needed as much as they would otherwise.

As mentioned above, star players like Axar Patel have openly admitted they are not fans of the rule. If teams can simply swap specialists in and out, the need for multi-dimensional cricketers reduces. Over time, that could impact the development pipeline in Indian cricket. This is something that we have already seen. Shivam Dube, who played a starring role at T20 World Cup 2026, doesn’t bowl much in the IPL. With the Impact player rule, captains now have to plan for an extra variable mid-game, something that can distract their performance.

Meanwhile, at the captains’ meet, there were also suggestions around allowing a ball change midway through the second innings to counter heavy dew, a recurring issue in Indian conditions. But that proposal didn’t find favour either.

Match referee head Javagal Srinath and umpires’ panel chief Nitin Menon explained that the current provision already allows for ball changes in the second innings of the match. While the players wanted the rule to come into effect for both the teams, the decision of allowing ball change only in the second innings will continue.
