Chennai Super Kings will be eyeing redemption as they commence their IPL 2026 campaign by taking on Rajasthan Royals on March 30 in Guwahati. The five-time champions had a forgettable season in IPL 2025, finishing at the tenth place on the points table for the first time ever in the history of the tournament. CSK are undergoing a transition phase, with the team finally deciding to pivot and recruit more youngsters in the squad than veterans.
The team has made multiple amends to their squad. Sanju Samson has been roped in, which means the team has found a new opener or a number 3 batter. Young additions like Kartik Sharma or Prashant Veer can bolster the middle-order even though the lack of experienced players like Ravindra Jadeja or Sam Curran can play a huge role. Additionally, the lack of bowling options could potentially impact CSK. Ahead of IPL 2026, let’s take a look at the team’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
What are CSK’s strengths for IPL 2026?
CSK boast of a strong top-order, especially after roping in Sanju Samson. The Keralam batter is all set to partner with Ayush Mhatre at the top of the batting order to give CSK a perfect start. After all, Sanju has proved his worth as an opener in the recently concluded T20 World Cup whereas Mhatre not only impressed with his limited performances in IPL 2025 but also emerged as one of India’s reliable batters in the U19 World Cup. Together, the duo form a formidable unit, with both having scored ample runs in the previous edition.
Next, CSK have an experienced unit in terms of wicketkeepers. While Dhoni is the oldest uncapped player in the league who has been a part of CSK since in the inception of the tournament, Samson has been the latest addition to the side. CSK can also avail the services of Rs 14.2 crore buy Kartik Sharma. By far, CSK have enough keeper-batters in their line-up and do not need to worry about that factor.
Despite releasing Ravindra Jadeja, CSK still boast of a strong spin-unit. The department will be spearheaded by Noor Ahmad, who was the highest wicket-taker for the team in IPL 2025. Apart from him, the team also has the likes of Shreyas Gopal – who is an experienced person in domestic cricket – and Rahul Chahar.
What are CSK’s weaknesses in IPL 2026?
CSK biggest weakness in IPL 2026 is the lack of options in terms of death bowling. With Nathan Ellis being ruled out, the side has to now depend on Matt Henry, Anshul Kamboj and Mukesh Choudhary to do the job. Further, they will be over-reliant on Noor Ahmad and Rahul Chahar. While the former fared well in the previous season, the latter is not in good form and could be a menace for the team. The team is also dependent on an inexperienced uncapped line-up, comprising of the likes of Urvil Patel, Kartik and Prashant.
CSK further have no like-for-like replacement for Jadeja, despite claiming that Veer can fulfill that role. More than that, there is a lack of finishing options, as Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis seem to be the only trusted options while the rest have never been put in a situation where they can finish games for the side, at least in big matches.
What are the opportunities for CSK in IPL 2026?
One of the biggest opportunity for CSK in IPL 2026 is Sanju Samson emerging as the leading run-getter for the team. The batter recently bagged the Player of the Tournament award in the T20 World Cup 2026 with three trailblazing knocks in the last three games. Samson as CSK’s opener could potentially solve CSK’s woes at the top of the order and emerge as the team’s MVP.
MS Dhoni has the chance to bat higher up the order, unlike what he did in the previous season, and hence make a name for himself. Last season, the former CSK skipper earned much flak for batting way down the order which neither helped the team nor his personal record. If things go well, one can potentially see Dhoni batting at a higher position and making a name for himself.
With Ellis all but ruled out of IPL 2026, Khaleel could might as well emerge as CSK’s best bowler in IPL 2026. After all, he had the most dot balls by a CSK bowler to his name in IPL 2025. The bowler could very well turn out to be CSK’s go-to bowler and the best in the current generation with some impressive performances in IPL 2026.
What are the threats for CSK at IPL 2026?
CSK’s primary concern will be the vulnerability of the batters to lose wickets in quick succession. Majority of the batters are inexperienced when it comes to international or league cricket and hence could lose their wickets quite quickly. The second is the form of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. While the star has performed decently in domestic cricket, he has been injury prone in the past, which also forced him to miss majority of IPL 2025. CSK will hope that he plays a full season, else the line-up could be affected because of him.
Another threat is the possibility of MS Dhoni eating up a place in CSK’s XI. While Dube was used in that position in the previous edition, there is very little chance of that happening in this season, given that CSK would need him with the ball as well in the absence of Curran and Jadeja. However, it will be impossible to leave out MSD as well – due to the crowd pulling factor. Therefore, it is heavily impossible to have Dhoni just as an impact player.
