UEFA Champions League: Safe to say, it was not a night to remember for Bayern Munich fans in their first-leg game against Manchester City. They felt as though they were in the game and then in the blink of an eye, City had scored 3 goals past them. The Etihad erupted after the final whistle, but the atmosphere was not quite like that throughout the game. They were hostile towards one Bayern Munich player in particular. It was not a happy homecoming for Joao Cancelo as the left-back was targeted and booed by the Man City fans when he was brought on in the second half, replacing Alphonso Davies. A fantastic night was in store for Pep Guardiola’s team after Rodri opened the scoring with a spectacular goal in minute 27. Then, to cap off one of City’s best-ever evenings in Europe, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland scored, giving them a dominating advantage for the Champions League quarterfinal return at the Allianz Arena.
As the outclassed German giants attempted everything, the Portuguese defender, Joao Cancelo received a nasty response when he came on to replace Alphonso Davies late in the game. As soon as he stepped onto the pitch, the boos started ringing around the Etihad. Another former City star, Leroy Sane, played the entire game, as Cancelo was only given nine minutes with the Bundesliga champions already down 3-0.

Social Media was as ungenerous as the Man City faithful in the stadium during the game. One wrote, ‘Pep owns this guy. benched by another team.’ Another wrote, ‘He got benched by Pep, Nagelsmann and Tuchel now. Salah truly finished his career.’ A third claimed, ‘Benched against us. Poetic.’ A fourth handed out the warning, ‘Always respect and trust the coach.’
Even though Cancelo was booed by the City faithful, it seemed as though the bridge hasn’t been quite burned between him and City. Most of the City players did go and embrace a solemn-looking Cancelo at the end of the game.

Manchester City vs Bayern Munich – 1st Leg
It has not been the dreamiest of starts for Thomas Tuchel and his tenure at Bayern Munich. After falling to the Premier League winners 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium, Thomas Tuchel’s team now needs a miracle to advance to the semifinal round of the Champions League.
Pep Guardiola’s team put on a commanding performance, and due to goals from Rodri, Bernardo Silva, and Erling Haaland, they have a shot at making the semifinals. It will be one of the best comebacks in recent history if Bayern is able to turn it all around, looking at how City is playing right now. An exciting second leg awaits us all.
As far as Cancelo is concerned, it seems as though his stint at City is not going to continue. With the reception he received and his relationship with Guardiola, it seems as though the LB would not be donning the City jersey in the 2023/24 season.
