Djokovic was deported from Australia ahead of the tournament last year due to his non-vaccination stance against Covid. He was subsequently issued a three-year ban. However ahead of the Grand Slam event this year, his ban was lifted and he has bene allowed to enter the country despite not being vaccinated.
He has received a warm welcome. He began his Australia sojourn with a title victory at the Adelaide International last week. He is now aiming to lift his 10th Australian Open title.
Speaking about Djokovic’s return, tournament’s director and CEO of Tennis Australia, Craig Tiley said the organisers want the atmosphere at the Melbourne Park to be positive. ‘If anyone disrupt the enjoyment of anyone else – boom, they are out,’ he told. “We don’t want them on site. They can stay away or we will kick them out.”
He was however positive that Djokvic will receive a rousing reception from the fans in Melbourne. The 21-time Grand Slam winner receoved a welcoming reception last week in Adelaide, where he clinched his career’s 92nd title. He is now eyeing to extend his record in the year’s first major.
He has already begun practice but has injury concerns ahead of the tournament. During the Adelaide International, he had to receive treatment on his ankle while playing in the semifinal. Hwever he was soon back on his feetand showed no signs of discomfort.
He made his return to the Melbourne Park on Wednesday, 11th January, He was involved in a practice session alongside former World No.1 Daniil Medvedev. The Serbian however had to cut short his practice as he had some issues in his hamstring. The 35-year-old is also scheduled to participate in a practice session against Aussie Nick Kyrgios on Friday, January 13. He now hopes to recover and be fully fit by the time the tournament kickstarts on Monday.
