SCHEDULE – MONDAY, 3 JANUARY 2022

ATP Cup Day 3 Results: Spain beats Norway

  • P. Carreno Busta (ESP) BEAT V. Durasovic (NOR) 6-3, 6-3
  • R. Bautista Agut (ESP) BEAT C. Ruud (NOR) 6-4, 7-6(4)

Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut beat world number eight Casper Ruud 6-4 7-6(4) on Monday in Group A to eliminate Norway from the ATP Cup in Sydney, while Georgia were also knocked out of the team event after defeat to Poland.

Bautista Agut’s victory came after Pablo Carreno Busta dispatched Viktor Durasovic 6-3 6-3 to give Spain a 1-0 lead in the tie. The Spaniards, who won their opener against Chile, face Serbia in their last group match on Wednesday.

“I’m really happy. Casper is playing unbelievable tennis. He had unbelievable performances last year,” said Bautista Agut, the world number 19.
“Today I played really well, I made very few unforced errors and played aggressively… I feel happy, I like playing in Australia.”

ATP Cup Day 3 Results: Poland thrash Georgia

  • K. Majchrzak (POL) BEAT A. Bakshi (GEO) 6-1, 6-1
  • H. Hurkacz (POL) BEAT A. Metreveli (GEO) 6-7(5) 6-3 6-1

Kamil Majchrzak gave Poland the lead with a 6-1 6-1 win over Georgia’s Alexsandre Bakshi in just under an hour in Group D before Hubert Hurkacz rallied for a 6-7(5) 6-3 6-1 win against Aleksandre Metreveli.

“He played well in the first set and things were not going my way,” Hurkacz said. “But I got better with each set and am happy to get the win.

“It was different conditions from the first match … The ball bounced a little higher and faster, so I needed to adapt. But it helped to have the Polish crowd here supporting us. They were great.”

Poland, who beat Greece in their group opener on Saturday, can advance to the semi-finals if they beat Argentina on Wednesday.

World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas, who skipped his ATP Cup opener against Hurkacz due to an elbow injury, will play his first singles match of the year against Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman in Group D later on Monday.

Group D – Greece v Argentina
M. Pervolarakis (GRE) vs F. Delbonis (ARG)
S. Tsitsipas (GRE) vs D. Schwartzman (ARG)
Subject to change – M. Pervolarakis (GRE) / S. Tsitsipas (GRE) vs M. Gonzalez (ARG) / A. Molteni (ARG)

World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas crashed to defeat in his first singles match since elbow surgery Monday, losing an epic battle with feisty Argentinian Diego Schwartzman 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-3 at the ATP Cup.

He showed up to play 11th-ranked Schwartzman and looked at his battling best in winning the first set tiebreak, moving freely with little sign of his right elbow causing problems.
But the 23-year-old lost his focus, and with it, five games in a row. After being broken in the second set, there was no way back on a humid Sydney evening.

“It’s his first match for two months after surgery and I was just thinking if the match was going to go long I had a chance,” said Schwartzman after the 2hr 42min battle that helped Argentina win their second ATP tie after beating Georgia on day one.

“I was ready for that and I think everything is going very well, playing Stefanos is not easy.”

D. Lajovic (SRB) vs C. Garin (CHI)

Last time the two nations met two years ago, Serbia ran out 2-1 victors over Chile. Four players — Dusan Lajovic and Nikola Cacic of Serbia and Chile’s Cristian Garin and Alejandro Tabilo — were part of that tie.

Filip Krajinovic, who won two matches for Serbia to ensure a 2-1 victory over Norway on Sunday, will begin the Group A tie against Tabilo.
