The Sri Lankan off-spinner did not get any wickets in his first three overs, where he conceded 25 runs. He was brought into the attack once again in the 19th over by Mahendra Singh Dhoni in a move that seemed a bit weird since spinners don’t usually bowl in the penultimate over.

However, the gamble paid dividends as Theekshana dismissed three batters in the same over. His first ball was a full-toss which Mahipal Lomror failed to properly connect with, giving a simple catch to Ruturaj Gaikwad at long-on.
In his second delivery, he flighted the ball outside off stump and his Sri Lankan teammate Wanindu Hasaranga tried to deposit it into the stands, but he ended up giving another catch to Gaikwad.

While Theekshana did not complete his hat-trick, he eventually got the third wicket in the last ball. Shahbaz Ahmed went for a big hit but could not pick the carrom ball and ended up getting clean bowled, as the 21-year-old spinner finished with numbers of 4-0-27-3.
Interestingly, Theekshana bowled brilliantly in his previous match against Bangalore as well. In that fixture, he picked up a four-wicket haul by dismissing Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli, Shahbaz Ahmed and Suyash Prabhudessai.
