IPL 2023: Viacom18’s OTT app JioCinema received 2.5 crore downloads on the first day of the IPL 2023. This has shattered the record for the most-installed app in a single day, which is encouraging for JioCinema who are making IPL debut as broadcasters. On March 31, the opening match between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings attracted 6 crore unique views to the app. On JioCinema, the match had a peak concurrent audience of 1.6 crore.

On day one, total match views on JioCinema touched 50 crore.

For a better match-viewing experience, the Reliance-owned platform had unveiled a host of app features like 4k streaming and different camera angles.

IPL 2023 began on March 31 with the opening game between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings being played in Gujarat. By a margin of 5 wickets, the former won the game.

JioCinema means Money in IPL 2023

The Jio moment for the IPL has come. JioCinema met expectations on the first day, drawing 1.5 Cr viewers when MS Dhoni hit a massive six simultaneously. Viacom18 projected 500 million IPL watchers, which is significantly less than the 514 million monthly viewers of YouTube India. With over 50 million viewers on the first day alone, JioCinema is on track to surpass YouTube.

But, this is bad news for Disney-Star. Due to their paywalls, Star Sports and Disney+Hotstar will probably witness a decrease in revenue. As per sources, Viacom18 is expected to gain 60% of the IPL’s advertising revenue, with digital revenue finally surpassing TV.

 

According to Media Partners Asia, JioCinema’s estimated ad revenue will be 60%, whereas Disney-Star may have trouble recouping the Rs 23,575 crore it spent to purchase IPL Media rights. MPA’s forecast predict, JioCinema might reach $350 million in revenue while Star’s ad sales could be between $200 and 220 million.

However, it should be highlighted that neither site has been able to sell all of its advertising space.
