After scoring a first ball duck in the opening game and 40 against CSK in the previous game, Rahul stepped up for his team when it mattered the most. Asked to bat first by Sunrisers, KL Rahul opened the innings alongside Quinton de Kock. Sunrisers made a tactical move by bringing in off-spinner Washington Sundar to bowl with the new ball and the ploy worked as de Kock was dismissed in his very first over.
Washington Sundar came back in the next over to trap Evin Lewis lbw that left Lucknow reeling at 16/2. Soon Manish Pandey too got out playing a rash shot off Romario Shepherd. Seeing the fall of three quick wickets from the non-strikers end, Rahul decided to play a cautious innings along with Deepak Hooda.

Rahul allowed Hooda to play the role of the aggressor and he decided to anchor the innings. The duo shared a brilliant 87-run stand for the fourth wicket. Hooda was the first one to get to his fifty and he got out soon. Rahul then got to his fifty off 40 balls with a single to deep-midwicket. It was also a career milestone for Rahul as he brought up his 50th T20 half-century.

After his fifty, Rahul decided to accelerate and took on Washington Sundar in the 17th over by smashing a four and a six off consecutive deliveries. He was dismissed in the penultimate over by missing a full length delivery from Natarajan that hit his pads and was given out by the umpire.
Rahul’s 68, coupled with Deepak Hooda’s fifty, helped the team set a challenging total of 170 for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
