In an interview with The Telegraph, the 72-year-old stated that Dhoni’s side holds the upper hand over Kapil Dev’s class of ’83, which Gavaskar himself was a crucial member of, in terms of balance and ability.

“I know am going to upset my teammates of 1983 but in terms of balance and sheer ability, the 2011 team under Dhoni has to be the best that I have seen. Remember, nobody expected us to win in 1983, but in 2011, not just Indians but most of the cricketing world expected India to win. To play under the humongous pressure of those expectations and win the World Cup is a testament to that team’s talent and temperament,” Gavaskar said.

Incidentally, the little master was a part of India’s first-ever ODI match, which was at Headingley against Mike Denness’ formidable England team. Batting against the likes of Chris Old and Robin Jackman, Gavaskar did well to score 28 runs from 35 deliveries, though India eventually went on to lose the game.

The Mumbaikar is a part of an elite group of players who have had the privilege of leading the Indian team in ODI cricket, but on being asked about who is the best-ever ODI captain this team has had so far, Gavaskar said “The two captains whose teams won the World Cup would definitely be the best.”
