“He’s got great skill. The nature of selection in international cricket is that you have to be ready to play out of position. You have to be flexible and Sanju has been. What Sanju has to do is control what he does in the middle when he gets a chance,” said Sangakkara.
“I’ve had lots of conversations with him. He takes a lot of pride in preparation and to play for India. I just hope they can give him a nice, extended run so that he can settle in and not have the nagging suspicion that he may be dropped for the next match or the next series. That’s a tough place to be in for him or for anyone,” he added.

Sanju Samson having made his debut in 2015 is yet to be considered a regular for the Men in Blue. Sangakkara, who mentors Samson in the IPL team is of the opinion that India will lose Samson’s best year if they fail to utilize him. With Rishabh Pant dropped from white ball cricket, Samson now has an in-form Ishan Kisha rivaling him for the keeper’s spot.
“He’s got to keep things simple, just concentrate on batting. The IPL is one thing, playing for India is another. He might have to bat outside position depending on where they want him to fit in. Whether he’s batting at the top or lower-middle order at 5 and 6, he’s got the game, the power, the touch, the placement and the mentality to do really well,” said Sangakkara.

“The one thing he shouldn’t do is think that this is his final chance to prove his mettle and try and be desperate to succeed. He’s got every single thing going for him. He’s a wonderful young man, he’s got skills and temperament. Let it settle, don’t fight it, make sure you’re adjusting to what comes at you on the day. And then, go out there and enjoy the way he plays.” Sangakara adviced.
“And that’s absolute truism when it comes to Sanju. If he can play at the level of skill that he has, he’s going to enjoy his cricket. It’s a wonderful opportunity for him and the fans who can see what thing young man can do, because he’s a very special talent,” he concluded.
