“It was very sweet of Kapil paji to have sent a bouquet and a small hand-written note to my home, congratulating me for crossing him. People tend to forget that legends like Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar are the reason why I’m sitting here today. We need to be deeply indebted to them,” Ravichandran Ashwin said after receiving the great gesture from Kapil Dev.

Ravichandra Ashwin imprinted his name in the history books when he overtook Kapil Dev’s 434 wicket record to set himself as India’s highest wicket-taker in the red-ball format of the game. Ashwin now has 436 wickets under his belt. However, India’s highest wicket-taker in tests is still Ani Kumble who has 619 wickets and placed fourth in the list behind Muralitharan, Warne, and Anderson.

Haryana Hurricane aka Kapil Dev was delighted when Ashwin overtook him to get the second spot. He congratulated the spinner and said that Ashwin should chase more wicket records. “It’s a great achievement especially from a guy who did not get enough opportunities in the recent past. Had he got those opportunities, he would have crossed 434 much earlier. I am happy for him; why should I hold it [the second position] from him? My time has passed,” Kapil Dev told Mid-Day.
“Ashwin is a fabulous cricketer, an excellent and intelligent spinner. He should now target 500 Test scalps, which I am sure he will try and achieve. In fact, many more [wickets] than that,” added Kapil Dev.

For Ravi Ashwin, another big milestone awaits. Overtaking the record of Anil Kumble would not be a child’s play. Kumble currently leads Ashwin by 183 wickets. It would be an extraordinary feat if Ashwin manages to equal or surpass Kumble’s record.
“It’s a good distance away. Anil bhai was a phenomenal cricketer. It would be a matter of honor if I can get close to his (Kumble’s) record. I believe in taking one day and one match at a time,” Ashwin said.

Former India wicketkeeper and CSK teammate, Parthiv Patel said, “In 2008 when we both were a part of CSK, Ashwin was always curious to learn new things. He also used to spend time with Muralitharan during that phase. Credit to Ashwin… 436 wickets is a huge milestone. If he continues to play for another three-four years, he can get close or even break Kumble’s record.”
India team skipper Rohit Sharma believes Ashwin to be an all-time great. “An all-time great in my eyes. He has been playing for so many years and performed for the country. So many matchwinning performances—people might have different points of view but from where I see, he is an all-time great for me. It’s a big thing in his cricketing career to achieve that feat (breaking Kapil Dev’s record),” Rohit Sharma said.
