The 3 biggest talking pointers ahead of the 1st T20I are of opener’s role, the finisher’s role, and the bowling combination. Dravid has a plethora of options to choose from, but he can only finalize one among the following positions.

1. Opening position role
India’s stand-in skipper KL Rahul will open the innings, but who will be his opening partner is the one the big decision Dravid has to make. Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad are frontrunners to partner along with Rahul. Venkatesh Iyer is also another option owing to his role as an opener in the KKR team. Dravid it seems will most likely finalize between Gaikwad and Kishan. Both the players were not seen in the best of forms though in IPL 2022 season.
While Kishan managed to score 418 runs in 14 matches, his strike rate was questionable as he got those runs at just 120.11. Kishan was not consistent also and that resulted in MI failing miserably at the top. Gaikwad also looked all at sea as he could muster only 368 runs at an average of 26.29. Kishan though opened with Rohit during India’s last T20 series against Sri Lanka and that could just go in his favor ahead of 1st T20I against South Africa.

- Finisher’s Role
Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik are fighting it out for the finisher’s role in the Indian team. Both players sizzled in the IPL 2022. Playing for RCB, Karthik scored 330 runs in 16 matches at a fantastic strike rate of 183.33. He finished matches for his side on demand by maintaining a cool and composed approach. On account of his stellar form for RCB, Karthik was recalled to the Indian side.
On the other hand, Pandya scored 487 runs and picked up 8 wickets for GT. He batted at the number four position and thrived on the additional responsibility of being the leader of the side. The 28-year-old usually is the designated finisher for India. But with Karthik finding success in the finisher’s role for RCB, Dravid will have a huge task on his hands by deciding on the finisher for the side.
- Bowling combination
Probably Dravid’s biggest headache – deciding on the bowling combination. India have a new-look pace attack with Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, and Avesh Khan in it. Harshal Patel is also new. Among the pacers only Bhuvneshwar Kumar has experience. Dravid and KL have to decide who will partner with Kumar.
While Harshal will take one’s pacer slot, the fight for the other will be among Arshdeep and Malik. Dravid will also have to decide on who his spin bowling option are. Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, and Yuzvendra Chahal are the leading spinners. Kuldeep and Chahal were seen in superb form in the ongoing IPL. While Bishnoi impressed in his debut T20 series against West Indies.
