IND vs. ENG 2nd T20: Mohd Shami’s anticipated return to top-flight cricket did not inspire confidence during his almost hour-long session of varied intensity at the India nets on Friday. Mohd. Shami, who last donned India colors in the 2023 World Cup semi-final, was working hard to find his bowling rhythm at the Chepauk. However, he didn’t quite hit the fluid peak that makes him a formidable opponent for batters.

Will Shami play in IND vs. ENG 2nd T20?

While Shami was expected to feature in the playing XI for India’s first T20I against England in Kolkata on Wednesday, the management decided to delay his comeback. Much like at the Eden Gardens, Shami was very active in the nets here as well. He started with a light jogging session alongside assistant coach Abhishek Nayar. Then, the 34-year-old participated in throwing drills with fielding coach T Dilip before moving to the bowling nets near the Madras Cricket Club stand.

With both legs heavily bandaged, Shami began with a half run-up and worked up a reasonable pace. After a few deliveries with a reduced run-up, he returned to a full run-up, but the smoothness in his approach and release was lacking. He managed to hit the base of the stumps a few times as bowling coach Morne Morkel closely observed him while acting as the wicketkeeper.

Shami doubtful for IND vs ENG 2nd T20

Shami then took a short break to chat with Morkel and head coach Gautam Gambhir before resuming his bowling. His rhythm and sharpness gradually improved, but he still appeared rusty.

This situation is puzzling since Shami was selected for the India squad for the series against England and the Champions Trophy after playing in the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Despite this, he didn’t seem to be at his lethal best and initially did not bowl to any of his batting colleagues, who were training outside at the MAC B’ ground. It looks like Shami’s return to the international arena might be delayed further.
