Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra reckons that KKR are bound to name Venkatesh Iyer as the new captain ahead of IPL 2025. The defending champs broke the bank to buy back the southpaw for a whooping Rs 23.75 cr at the mega auction. KKR and DC are the only two franchises who are yet to finalize on their captaincy picks ahead of the new season.
Will Venkatesh Iyer be named KKR captain for IPL 2025?
In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra opined that either Venkatesh or Rinku Singh will be the next captain. He claimed that despite the team acquiring Ajinkya Rahane for Rs 1.50 cr, he is unlikely to be named the skipper. Chopra said that it was a two-horse race for captaincy, with Venkatesh and Rinku being the frontrunners.
“It should be a two-horse race. It has to be either Venkatesh Iyer or Rinku Singh. In my opinion, Rinku Singh’s stocks should have increased. He is UP’s captain and is a proper player. However, it doesn’t seem like they would make him their captain as well,” Chopra said.

Chopra also cast aspersions on if KKR were regretting spending Rs 23.75 cr for Venkatesh Iyer. He said that the team had a variety of options to pick from in the auction, with stars like Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant going under the hammer who could have been bagged for such a price. He said that simply because KKR have invested so much of money on Iyer, they have no option but to name him as captain.
“However, they went with Venkatesh Iyer. They kept going a long way for him. In fact, they were having a fight with RCB. In the end, they got him and I think he could be their captain. When you have invested so much money in someone, Venkatesh Iyer might be KKR’s captain,” Chopra observed.
