Pakistan Women’s team captain Fatima Sana is taking inspiration from former India captain MS Dhoni ahead of the Women’s World Cup 2025. The Women in Green have a lackluster record in the world event, failing to garner wins in 3 of the five additions. The 2025 edition promises another tough encounter, but Sana is confident of breaking the jinx this time around.
Dhoni is the only captain to win all three ICC trophies and led India in more than 300 games across formats. He retired in 2020, but continues playing in the IPL. Sana made her debut in 2019, and admittedly watched a lot of captain Cool while growing up.
‘There is a lot to learn from him’ Dhoni fan Fatima Sana eyes World Cup glory
Fatima Sana will bank on her lessons learnt from watching MS Dhoni as she leads Pakistan in the Women’s World Cup 2025 starting later this month. Sana admitted to being inspired by Dhoni, watching the former India captain in action at CSK and even during interviews.
“It is natural to be a little nervous initially when captaining in a big tournament like the World Cup, but I take inspiration from Mahendra Singh Dhoni as a captain,” Fatima Sana said in an interview with PTI Bhasha.
“I have seen his matches as India and CSK captain. His on-field decision-making, calmness and the way he backs his players, there is a lot to learn from that. When I got the captaincy, I thought that I have to become like Dhoni. I also watched his interviews and got to learn a lot,” she added.
The 2025 Women’s World Cup will be Pakistan’s 6th appearance at the tournament. They only have 1 win in the last three editions, which came against the West Indies. West Indies failed to qualify for the 2025 edition from the qualifiers, which also featured Pakistan. However, despite the odds stacked against, Sana is hopeful of a strong showing.
“This time, the jinx will definitely be broken because the young players know how important this tournament is for Pakistan women’s cricket. In our country, women’s cricket is not seen as a career option. But if we play well, it will make a huge difference. Our effort will be to inspire parents in Pakistan to encourage their girls to make a career in sports,” she added.
