Australia managed to finish at 326/8 at the end of play on Day 1 of the AUS vs ENG Ashes 3rd Test in Adelaide on Wednesday

Australia cricket team managed to reach 326/8 at the end of play on Day 1 of the AUS vs ENG 3rd Ashes Test after a poor start. The hosts got off to the worst possible start, with openers Jake Weatherald and Travis Head departing for 10 and 18 runs respectively, managing to stitch together a partnership of just 33 runs. Australia won the toss and opted to bat first in the contest in Adelaide.

Carey, Khawaja save face for Australia

Opting to bat first in the Ashes 3rd Test, Australia lost both openers Weatherald and Head in quick succession within the first 8 overs. Steve Smith’s absence was felt in the game as Australia’s top-order struggled significantly. However, it was Usman Khawaja – who returned to the playing XI after missing the previous game – who made the save for Australia.

While Marnus Labuschagne departed for just 19 runs, Khawaja put up a spirited fight back. He scored 82 runs off 126 deliveries before he was sent packing. A 61-run partnership with Labuschagne set the stage for Australia’s comeback in the contest. After that, he continued his dominance with the bat, with Green joining him out in the middle. His partnership with Green was 0 but he did enough, with assistance from Carey.

Eventually, Carey finished with a 106-run knock while he stitched together a 91-run partnership with Khawaja. Following that, the Australian wicketkeeper-batter stitched together partnerships worth 59, 27 and 50 to guide Australia to a formidable position on Day 1 of the AUS vs ENG Ashes 3rd Test.

Mitchell Starc remains unbeaten on 33 while Nathan Lyon, who has made his comeback to the playing XI, is batting on zero. Australia are already 2-0 up in the series, having beaten England in Perth and Brisbane. Australia will be looking to add as many runs as possible before the get bowled out on Day 2.

Jofra Archer’s triple strike leaves Australia reeling

Archer, England’s pace spearhead, struck thrice in the 1st innings, wreaking havoc on Australia’s top-order. He got rid of Weatherald, Labuschage and Green, handing the hosts an early setback. Eventually, he finished with figures of 3/29 from his 16 overs on Day 1 of the 3rd Ashes Test.
