Harry Brook had made an error before the India vs. England 2nd T20I. It wasn’t anything technical that the English batter did but rather his poor choice of words. After England lost the first match in Kolkata, Brook admitted that they had no answers for the questions that Varun Chakaravarthy posed to them.
Harry Brook’s smog comment
However, he didn’t stop there. He went on to say that smog played a role in his and England’s failure. He felt the reason why the Indian spinners did that was because it was tough reading them due to the poor air quality in Kolkata.“Chakaravarthy is an exceptionally good bowler. But with the smog the other night, it was a lot harder to pick. Hopefully, the air is a bit clearer here (Chennai), and we can see the ball a bit easier,” Brook had said in the post-match press conference.
Fans took aim at Brook for his comment. There is no doubt that the air quality wasn’t that great in Kolkata, but if Jos Buttler and Indian batters could flourish on the same ground, why can’t he? Come the India vs. England 2nd T20I, people seemed to be eager to take a jibe at Brook.

Can’t find the ball, even without the smog?
Veterans Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri took aim at the young batter. They pulled his leg while sitting in the commentary box. “You don’t need the smog tonight. It sneaked through,” said Shastri after Chakaravarthy cleaned up Brook. Gavaskar said far behind either. “Varun Chakaravarthy is looking at him (Harry Brook) and saying, ‘Look, if there’s any smog there’,” he quipped as well.
With 5 matches still left, Harry Brook might hear the comment every time he fails. It might be a long tour for the batter, who’s yet to make his mark in white-ball cricket, having shown his ability in Tests already.
