Domestic career 

During his debut Ranji Trophy season in 2012, Axar Patel played only one match. However, he showcased exceptional performance during the 2013-14 Ranji Trophy season for Gujarat, emerging as one of the most consistent players. He scored 369 runs at an average of 46.12 and claimed 29 wickets at an economy rate of 23.58 across seven matches.

Notably, Patel played a crucial role in India Under-23s’ triumph in the ACC Emerging Teams Cup 2013, where he took seven wickets, including a four-for in the semi-final against UAE. This impressive performance earned him recognition, and he was honored with the “BCCI Under-19 Cricketer of the Year” award in 2014. Later, in August 2019, he was selected for the India Red team’s squad for the 2019–20 Duleep Trophy, followed by his inclusion in India C’s squad for the 2019–20 Deodhar Trophy in October 2019.

Axar Patel, hailing from Gujarat, debuted in IPL with Mumbai Indians in 2013, later becoming a key figure for Kings XI Punjab. Notably, he claimed a hat-trick for Kings XI Punjab in IPL 9 (2016). Delhi Capitals signed him for Rs 5 crore in 2019, retaining him for IPL 2020. Known for his left-arm orthodox spin, he adds balance to the bowling department. In IPL 2021, he scored 40 runs and took 15 wickets. Patel’s stellar performance earned him a spot in the following series against New Zealand, where he continued to impress, contributing with both bat and ball. Notably, he scored a half-century and an unbeaten 41 in the second match against New Zealand. In his most recent Test against Sri Lanka, Patel exhibited his bowling skills alongside Ravindra Jadeja, dismissing three Sri Lankan batters despite the presence of the seasoned spinner.

ODI Career 

After impressing in the 2014 IPL, Axar Patel earned a spot in India’s ODI squad for the tour to Bangladesh, followed by the series against Sri Lanka, where he took 11 wickets and scored 31 runs. Despite being part of the squad for the 2015 Cricket World Cup, he didn’t get a chance to play. In June 2016, he climbed to 13th place in ICC ODI rankings. However, he missed selection for the 2017 Champions Trophy. Though it seemed he’d become a regular, the emergence of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal altered the scenario. After a hiatus, he returned for the 2022 India Tour of West Indies, starring in the second ODI with a match-winning 64 runs and a crucial wicket. In the subsequent series against Zimbabwe, he contributed with his bowling, taking six wickets across three matches.

T20 International Career 

Axar Patel made his T20I debut for India against Zimbabwe in July 2015, showcasing an impressive performance with figures of 3 wickets for 17 runs. He later played against South Africa in 2015 and 2018, picking a solitary wicket in two matches. In 2021, after an outstanding Test series against England, he featured in the T20I series but struggled to make an impact. However, due to Ravindra Jadeja’s injury, he returned against New Zealand, taking four wickets across three matches. In 2022, Patel participated in various T20I series, showing glimpses of brilliance with both bat and ball.
