American Danielle Collins stunned Poland’s Iga Swiatek with a commanding 6-4 6-1 victory to reach the Australian Open final on Thursday where she will face local favourite Ash Barty. Collins, ranked 30 in the world, made a lighting start on Rod Laver Arena
and raced into a 4-0 lead. Seventh seed Swiatek responded to claw back some of the damage but 28-year-old Collins held firm to close out the set.

It was a repeat show in the second set as a dominant Collins again roared into a 4-0 lead.
This time there was no counter-attack by 2020 French Open champion Swiatek as Collins, showing no nerves as her first Grand Slam final loomed, wrapped up victory on her second match point in 78 minutes

  • The 20-year old won her first major two years ago at the Roland Garros, in just her second season as a pro.
  • She was put to test in the next season as she failed to go past the fourth round in all the three majors except the French Open, where she reached until the quarter-final.
  • She has however made a good start in 2022. In the Adelaide International before the Australian Open, she dropped just a single set in her three matches before facing a straight-set defeat in the semi-final.
  • In the Australian Open she cruised through the first three rounds with straight set victories.
  • Her first big challenge came against Sorona Cirstea in the fourth round. Despite losing the first set, she stayed calm to snatch the next two sets and advanced to the quarter-final.
  • It became even more tough for the youngster in the quarter-final. She lost the first set and had to play a tie-breaker in the second. She managed to win the second set and dropped just three games in the third to clinch a terrific victory to enter the semi-final.
  • Despite being pushed to a corner, the youngster showed mental strength to bounce back and that would be something that the 20-year old can be proud of.

“I’m pretty proud of myself, especially after matches like that, because coming back from losing the first set it’s a new thing for me. Being in the semifinal is great,” Swiatek said after the match. She will now be ready for another challenge from Danielle Collins.

  • The American has been on a terrific run right from the second-half of last year, making deep runs in most of the tournaments and also won back-to-back titles at Palermo and San Jose.
  • In the Australian Open, she stormed through the first two rounds in straight sets.
  • Her next two games against unseeded Clara Tauson and 19th seed Elise Mertens went till the third set but she played some good tennis to defeat her opponents.
  • In the quarter-final she was challenged by France’s Alize Cornet in the first set and clinched it in a tie-breaker but dropped just a single game in the second set to reach her second Australian Open semi-final.

Swiatek vs Collins Head-to-Head: Both the players have so far met once before. It was at the Adelaide International last year. Swiatek enjoys a 1-0 record as Collins suffered a lower back injury in that game after trailing 2-6, 0-3 and retired. Both the players are in a good form this year and have improved their game considerably from the last time they met. One can expect both the players giving a tough fight in the semis.

Speaking about facing Collins in the next game, Swiatek said, “For sure it’s gonna be hard, and she’s in great shape, you can see that, and really like confident. But I also feel that way. I just hope it’s gonna be a good match.”

On her part, Collins said, “No matter who I’m going to play, they’re going to be very tough competitors, very relentless, powerful, strong, everything you would expect in a semifinal.”
