Tyson Fury has been informed by Oleksandr Usyk that their uncontested match must happen this year or not at all.

In an effort to determine who is the greatest heavyweight of their generation, Fury and Usyk agreed to fight on December 23 in Saudi Arabia last month. Prior to Fury being dropped and nearly defeated by former UFC champion Francis Ngannou, the fight was scheduled to be announced in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

The judges ultimately spared the British player—and his Saudi supporters—from humiliation by giving him the victory by the narrowest of split votes. Additionally, as Fury was tending to his bruised ego and cut forehead, his team decided against going back to the desert as early as two days before Christmas, only for Usyk to reject their requests.

“The fight is happening on December 23, we have it in the contract,” he stated. December 23rd is the deadline. “I want to travel with Tyson Fury to cap off my amazing 20-year career. I must battle with him.” For all four belts to be on the line, Fury and Usyk needed special permission from one of the four boxing regulatory organizations.

Should the fight be rescheduled for next year, that might not be the case. It might also cause a postponement of their scheduled rematch, which is scheduled for mid-2024. Frank Warren, Fury’s promoter, is adamant that there is no possibility the bout will happen in less than eight weeks.

“It will go ahead but it will not be on December 23, it was crazy for some people to suggest that it could still go ahead then,” he stated. “He needs to switch off and take a break with his family. We’ll announce the date when we’re ready. However, the battle is signed, and it’s scheduled for early January or early February of next year.”
