Moises Henriques had last played for Australia back in 2021, and played 44 matches for the nation in all.

Former Australia all-rounder Moises Henriques will now soon be playing cricket for Portugal, and will be representing his birth nation in the T20 World Cup qualifiers in August. This would be his second innings of sorts, after having played his last international match in 2021.

Moises Henriques to represent Portugal

The 39-year-old has decent experience behind his back — having played 4 Tests, 16 ODIs and 24 T20Is in his career. Moreover he played a massive 131 FC games, followed by 141 List A, and 301 T20s. He also played the IPL until 2021, where he represented franchises like KKR, DC, RCB, SRH and PBKS — playing 62 matches in all, scoring 1000 runs and picking 42 wickets.

In the BBL he has an even better record, having played this season also, for Sydney Sixers. In 154 matches till now, he has scored 3324 runs at an average of 27, where his strike-rate is 128. To add to that, 22 wickets have come his way, with bowling load considerably reducing in the last few years. As far as Portugal is concerned, they start their qualifier journey with the European sub-regionals in Finland, which is the opening phase of the process. Meanwhile, Henriques qualified to play for Portugal after completing ICC’s three-year cooling off period for players switching from a full-member nation, to an associate nation.

Joe Burns, Ryan Campbell had moved away from Australia too

This is not the first time that an Aussie cricketer switched allegiance to an associate nation. A few years back, opener Joe Burns moved to Italy, and last played a match for his new side in 2025. Ryan Campbell went on to represent Hong Kong, in fact lead them, after he did not get enough chances with the Aussie team. Some other examples are Dirk Nannes, Tim David… who first represented other nations, and then got a chance to play for Australia.
