NZ vs AUS 1st Test: Lyon spins Australia to emphatic victory, Green shines with bat and ball

Australia 383 (Green 174*, Henry 5-70) and 164 (Lyon 41, Phillips 5-45) beat New Zealand 179 (Phillips 71, Lyon 4-43) and 196 (Ravindra 59, Lyon 6-65) by 172 runs

New Zealand vs Australia 1st Test, Day 4 (NZ vs AUS): Australia secured a convincing 172-run victory in the first Test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve, thanks to a dominant bowling performance spearheaded by Nathan Lyon and a magnificent knock by Cameron Green.

Nathan Lyon wrecks New Zealand hopes:

Chasing a target of 369, New Zealand started day four with cautious optimism, hoping to build on their day three fightback.

However, their hopes were dashed early on Day 4 as Nathan Lyon ran through the batting order, claiming three quick wickets in two overs. This included the crucial dismissals of Rachin Ravindra, Tom Blundell, and Glenn Phillips, effectively ending New Zealand’s resistance.

Lyon’s Match-Winning Performance:

Lyon, who also emerged as the top scorer in Australia’s second innings with 41 runs, proved to be the hero of the match. He finished with a stellar 10-wicket haul (6 for 65 and 4 for 43), the first 10-wicket haul by a spinner in New Zealand since 2006.

Cameron Green contribution:

While Lyon dominated with the ball, Cameron Green’s exceptional batting performance in the first innings laid the foundation for Australia’s victory. Green’s unbeaten 174 on a challenging pitch was instrumental in helping Australia post a formidable total.

New Zealand’s Struggles:

New Zealand struggled throughout the match, failing to put up a significant fight with the bat. Their bowlers, despite taking all ten Australian wickets, were unable to contain the visitors, particularly Green and the lower order.

Their decision to omit frontline spinner Mitchell Santner further hampered their chances, as the pitch offered increasing assistance to spinners throughout the match.

Australia’s dominance continues: NZ vs AUS 1st Test

This victory extends Australia’s dominance over New Zealand, who haven’t secured a Test win against the Aussies since 1993. It was also a historical match, marking only the fifth Test where all 13 bowlers took a wicket, the first such instance since 1966.

Looking Ahead: New Zealand vs Australia

The series now moves to Christchurch for the second Test, where New Zealand will be desperate to bounce back and level the series. However, with Australia in such dominant form, it will be a challenging task for the Black Caps.
