Cristiano Ronaldo’s second ever hat-trick for Manchester United saw them beat Tottenham 3-2 and go above Arsenal into fourth place.

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to the Manchester United starting XI after missing last weekend’s derby while Tottenham were hoping to continue their winning run after embarrassing Everton last time out.

It took just nine minutes for the Old Trafford crowd to be up in arms with Ronaldo calling for a penalty after what looked like handball from Eric Dier. But the Portugal international shook that off after 12 minutes with one of his greatest ever United goals.

Spurs thought they had equalised just moments later as Ben Davies struck from close range but a late flag from the linesman dampened away fans’ celebrations. Diogo Dalot then cleared a header off the line as the visitors continued to push for a deserved goal.

And they did get that goal as Harry Kane levelled from the penalty spot after Alex Telles handled inside the area. Tottenham were level for only three minutes though as Ronaldo tapped in after a pacy counter-attack.

Into the second half and United were looking to punish Spurs for the space they were leaving in behind. It was Antonio Conte’s side however, who went closest to finding the back of the net on the hour mark only for Heung-min Son to place an effort just wide.

Spurs did eventually get their equaliser with 20 minutes to go as Harry Maguire tried to block a cross and tapped into his own net. But this remarkable game took another turn with eight minutes to go as Cristiano Ronaldo scored his hat-trick after a brilliant header.
