In a crushing blow to nostalgic gamers and franchise fans alike, Ubisoft has officially confirmed the cancellation of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake. The decision comes as part of a sweeping “organizational, operational, and portfolio reset” intended to stabilize the company’s financial future.
For years, the remake of the 2003 classic has been trapped in development hell, bouncing between studios and suffering multiple delays. Now, the project has been permanently shelved alongside five other unannounced titles.
Ubisoft Cancels Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake
According to official statements, the decision was driven by a need to prioritize “enhanced quality benchmarks” and long-term value. Despite the project’s potential, Ubisoft determined that continuing development would require more time and financial investment than they could responsibly commit.
In a statement posted to the official Prince of Persia X (formerly Twitter) account, the development team expressed their regret:
“We’ve made the difficult decision to stop development on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. We know this is deeply disappointing… While the project had real potential, we weren’t able to reach the level of quality you deserve.”
The statement further clarified that they did not want to release a product that fell short of the legacy established by the original game.

The remake was first announced in 2020 with a planned 2021 release, initially helmed by Ubisoft’s studios in Pune and Mumbai. Following a backlash over its visual style, the game saw repeated delays. In 2022, development was transferred to the seasoned team at Ubisoft Montreal—the original creators of the 2003 classic—sparking hope that the project was back on track.
As recently as mid-2025, Ubisoft had reconfirmed a release window for 2026. However, this week’s strategic pivot has brought that journey to an abrupt end.
The Bigger Picture: Ubisoft’s “Major Reset”
The cancellation is just one casualty in a massive restructuring plan for the French publishing giant. Facing a competitive market and financial headwinds, Ubisoft announced it is:
- Canceling 6 Projects: Including the PoP remake, three unannounced new IPs, and a mobile title.
- Delaying 7 Games: Several unannounced titles have been pushed back to ensure quality.
- Closing Studios: Ubisoft Halifax and Ubisoft Stockholm are being shut down.
- Shifting Focus: The company aims to concentrate resources on its strongest genres, specifically Open World Adventures and Games-as-a-Service (GaaS) titles.
While this specific remake is dead, Ubisoft insists they are not abandoning the IP entirely. Their statement closed with an assurance that “Prince of Persia as a universe and a legacy continues to matter deeply to us.” For now, however, the sands of time have run out for the Prince’s return to the console generation that awaited him most.
