Djokovic vs Tsitsipas Final: Novak Djokovic’s father has been given a green light to watch the Australian Open Final from the Rod Laver Arena on Sunday, 29th January 2023. The Australian Open’s tournament Director Craig Tiley said on Sunday that Srdjan Djokovic is free to take his place in the stadium, despite calls on banning him from entering the stadium, following a controversy. He was earlier seen posing with a pro-Russian supporter on Wednesday night that created a stir among Ukranian supporters.

“It’s his decision. We’re going to let it be his decision and ultimately he’s got to make the call,” Tiley said on Sunday. Tiley also added that Srdjan Djokovic didn’t breach any event policy. “That’s been written about what he [allegedly] said hasn’t been correct and I think people are back-tracking from that. That’s unfortunate that massive assumptions were made,” Tiley added.

Srdjan Djokovic decided to miss watching Djokovic’s semifinal contest against Tommy Paul from the stadium on Friday following the controversy. ‘I know him personally and his family was devastated by what happened. It was not intentional and I agree with him and it was not designed to cause harm to anyone,’ Tiley went on to add.

Following his semifinal contest, Djokovic issued a statement saying he “wishes only for peace” and had “no intention of causing such headlines or disruption”. “My father, my whole family have been through several wars. As my father put in the statement, we are against the war. We will never support any violence or war,” he added.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year, Russian and Belarusian players have normally competed under a neutral white flag as independents, as is the case at the Australian Open. Spectators have also been banned from having Russian or Belarusian flags at the Grand Slam event.

Despite the controversy, the focus on Sunday will shift to the match betyween Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Djokovic is aiming to win his record 10th Australian Open title.
