Tilak Varma could play for India against New Zealand. On January 7, the 23-year-old had to be rushed to the Gokul Hospital in Rajkot after he experienced acute pain. Tilak was diagnosed with testicular torsion and underwent emergency surgery.
Initially, it was reported that Tilak might miss the T20 World Cup 2026. He’ll need about two to four weeks to recover. However, the story developed. It was understood that the batter from Hyderabad was ruled out for 2 weeks and could miss the first two India vs New Zealand T20Is.
Tilak Varma fitness update
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has put all reports and rumours to bed. Tilak will fly back to Hyderabad to commence his rehabilitation and his resume training once his wounds heal. His availability for the last two T20Is against New Zealand will be assessed depending on his progress.
“India batter Tilak Varma underwent surgery for an abdominal issue in Rajkot on Wednesday, 7 January. He was discharged from the hospital on Thursday morning and is scheduled to fly back to Hyderabad on Friday. He is currently stable and progressing well.
Tilak will resume physical training and gradually return to skill-based activities once his symptoms have fully resolved and wound healing is satisfactory. He is ruled out of the first three T20Is against New Zealand. His availability for the remaining two matches will be assessed based on his progress during the return-to-training and skill phases,” BCCI said in a release.
A little before BCCI provided an update, Tilak’s childhood coach Salam Bayash stated that his protégé will resume training in 7 to 10 days.
“It is a minor injury. There is nothing serious about it, and he will not miss the T20 World Cup. He will resume his training in seven to ten days,” Bayash told The Times of India.
Tilak himself provided an update about his surgery and recovery. He assured everyone that he’ll be back on the field soon, reaffirming what Bayash said. “Thank you for all the overwhelming love. Already on the road to recovery, and I’ll be back on the field sooner than you know it,” Tilak wrote on Instagram.
