From 2021 to 2023, Suryakumar Yadav was just the world’s best T20 batter. During his 3-year period, he reached heights that no one before him had. With Rohit Sharma hanging up his boots and injury concerns for Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar becomes the perfect candidate for T20I captaincy.
Suryakumar Yadav’s form slump
However, his form has dipped in the aftermath. In 29 innings since, Suryakumar has scored just one fifty. His average and strike rate have plummeted. Before the concerns grew, he pulled off one of his best Indian Premier League (IPL) performances in 2025 for the Mumbai Indians (MI).
One assumed Suryakumar had gone through a rough patch. And he’ll be back on his feet as India’s best batter. But that didn’t happen. In the 2025 Asia Cup, the 360-degree batter scored 72 runs at 101.40 in 6 innings. Big and small, he failed against all teams.

With the 2026 T20 World Cup around the corner, the concerns grew. Suryakumar fought off criticism with claims that he wasn’t out of form but runs. After a couple of good performances in Australia, he disappointed at home against South Africa. With just one series left before the ICC event, Suryakumar had pressure to prove himself.
Shows promise but falls short
In the India vs New Zealand 1st T20I, the 35-year-old looked better than he has in months and crossed the 30-run mark. He pulled out his infamous pick-up shot. His sweep was working well against Ish Sodhi. It looked like his fifty drought was about to end, and then Suryakumar gifted his wicket to Mitchell Santner by going half-heartedly with the loft over long-on.
For a little while, the Surya we’d seen in IPL 2025 was back. But the Indian T20I captain failed to build on the momentum. But this 32-run knock leaves a little to be desired. With the T20 World Cup just 2 weeks away, it’s good that Suryakumar has finally got some runs in the bank, but it’s better than what we saw in the last few months.
