Until now, it was just a mystery, as to what had happened to India Test skipper Shubman Gill, during the first match in Kolkata last month. In what looked like a neck spasm, the stylish batter had to miss both the Tests, which India lost in a major embarrassment. Nonetheless, after much speculation, Gill is fit and back in action, as IND take on SA in the T20Is.
Shubman Gill fit & fine
The T20I VC also gave a clarity, on what the actual issue was. In an interview before the match, he revealed, “I am fine, spent a bit of time at the COE. Perfectly fine physically and mentally too. I had a kind of disc bulge in my neck that was hitting my nerves. I had a bit of a spasm before the start of play that morning, and when I played the match, I strained my neck and the bulge hit the nerve, so I had to go to the hospital for a couple of days.”
Opens up on neck injury
Shubman Gill also said, while it was frustrating to miss the matches for Team India, but then the T20I side was moving in the correct direction, ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026.
“Watching from the sidelines, the Test matches didn’t go pretty well, but we did very well in the ODIs. Hopefully, we do well in the T20Is. We have 10 T20s before the start of the World Cup. We will find the momentum and rhythm, hopefully. Momentum is one thing we want to strive for. We want to find the right combinations for different surfaces that we might encounter in the World Cup,” he added.
Meanwhile, as far as the first match of the series is concerned, Gill fell for only 4 from 2 deliveries. India was reeling at 48/3 in 6.3 overs at one stage.
