December 2020 was the last time India played a T20I match against Australia in Australia.

Cricket Australia (CA) has been building the upcoming India vs Australia white-ball series on the back of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The Indian stars have retired from two formats already, and this might just be the last time they play in Australia.

The craze to watch them for potentially the last time is catching on. Cricket Australia (CA) has already sold 175,000 tickets, and the series is still 13 days away. But even without Rohit and Kohli, CA isn’t having any issues.

The Shubman Gill effect?

The modern greats won’t feature in the India vs Australia T20I series, but the biggest Australian stadium, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), has already been sold out for the match on October 31.

“The huge crowd anticipated for the Melbourne T20I is another strong indicator of the incredible interest in this series. We’re thrilled to see fans embracing the Australia v India contest with such passion, and we look forward to delivering a world-class experience both on and off the field,” CA CEA Todd Greenberg said in a statement.

This clearly shows that the appetite for Indian cricket in Australia isn’t limited to Rohit and Kohli. Shubman Gill, who’s the new poster boy, might have played a big role in creating the buzz. Abhishek Sharma, the world’s best T20I batter, would have certainly played a part as well. Then you have other big names like Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah.

“To have over 175,000 tickets sold with 13 days until the first ODI in Perth is a phenomenal result. It speaks volumes about the strength of the rivalry and the enthusiasm of fans across the country,” Greenberg added.

Public-allocated tickets for Sydney and Manuka Oval matches are already exhausted, while the Adelaide ODI and Gabba T20I are nearing capacity, with fewer than 5,000 public tickets left for each.
