There aren’t many who have openly criticised Rohit Sharma for his failures in Test matches. Sunil Gavaskar did so, and it seems, as per various reports, that the Indian skipper went on to complain to the BCCI about the same. Now, former secretary of the board Sanjay Jagdale has been severe on Rohit the Test batsman.
In an interview with CricBlogger, he said, Rohit Sharma is an average Test player but a brilliant white-ball player. “Rohit is an average Test player. In white ball, he is brilliant. He shouldn’t have been allowed to extend his career,” Jagdale told CricBlogger. There were talks about axing Rohit during the IND vs AUS series, or after, where he could only score 31 runs in three Tests. But later, the skipper clarified, that he would continue.
He further supported his argument by saying, if Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane could be dropped, why not Rohit. “If Pujara and Rahane could be dropped, why can’t you drop Rohit Sharma? At least, Pujara and Rahane have scored runs all over the world,” Jagdale said.
In fact, he raised a pertinent point, that why wasn’t Rohit Sharma replaced as the captain, during the IND vs BAN series, that India had won. “The Bangladesh series was a great opportunity for the selectors to pick a new Test captain, but they didn’t do it,” he said.

Having said that, Jagdale made it clear, that Virat Kohli is here to stay and score a lot of runs for the country. “Virat is class. He can still score runs for his country. He is actually caught in ego battle to chase deliveries outside the off-stump, which you can’t do in red ball cricket because of swing and seam. Virat is such a big player that he is still under the impression that he can hit the ball like he does in white ball cricket,” Jagdale concluded.
