India cricket team captain Suryakumar Yadav revealed that the side was made to wait for an hour to receive the Asia Cup trophy after beating Pakistan on Sunday. The Men in Blue celebrated without the trophy after they refused to accept it from ACC and PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Coming down hard at Naqvi, SKY claimed that the Indian team waited patiently to get the trophy and did not go inside the dressing room.
SKY spills beans on Asia Cup trophy saga
In an interview with The Indian Express, Surya claimed that the Indian team did not make anyone wait for the presentation ceremony, adding that the ACC officials had ran away with the trophy. He recalled that the ACC officials were standing on the stage, chatting and that someone took the trophy away after the crowd started booing.
“We didn’t close the door and sit inside the dressing room. We didn’t make anyone wait for the presentation ceremony. Trophy leke bhaag gaye woh (They ran away with the trophy). That’s what I saw. I don’t know, some people were making a video of us, but we were standing. We didn’t go inside,” Suryakumar said.
The Indian captain further clarified that no one from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) or the Central Government had told them not to accept the trophy from Naqvi. SKY stated that the decision was taken on the ground by the team. He added that the team waited on the ground following the game on Sunday and that the coaches and the support staff had gotten their phones from the dressing room.
“First of all, let me make it clear, no one from the Government or the BCCI told us anything throughout the tournament that if someone gives a trophy, we won’t take it. We took that decision on our own on the ground,” SKY said.
