Mohammed Shami and his younger brother Mohammed Kaif have been summoned by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The fast bowlers from Bengal have been called for a hearing as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which commenced on December 16, 2025.

ECI has found some discrepancies in Shami and Kaif’s enumeration forms. According to India Today, there were some progeny mapping and self-mapping related irregularities in their forms. ECI had issued notices, directing the brothers to appear before the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) on January 5.

Shami’s request for hearing date change accepted

However, due to Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) 2025-26 commitments, Shami and Kaif wouldn’t be able to present themselves at the SIR hearing. Shami had written to ECI informing them about his prior commitments. After this, the hearing has been postponed between January 9 and 11, after Bengal’s group stage matches end and before the quarterfinal commences on January 12.

“I am writing with reference to the notice received regarding my appearance before your office on 05 January 2026 in connection with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Electoral Roll. I would like to respectfully inform you that due to my current participation in domestic cricket matches, wherein I am officially representing the Bengal State Team, I shall be unable to attend the scheduled hearing on the mentioned date and time,” Shami wrote in his letter to the ECI.

Shami and Kaif are both enrolled as voters in Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Ward Number 93, which falls in the Rashbehari Assembly constituency. Originally from Amroha in Uttar Pradesh, the brothers are permanent residents of Kolkata and represent Bengal in domestic cricket.
