Hours after Afghanistan were handed a defeat in a closely fought game against South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2026 on Wednesday, February 11, they have been handed with another jolt with veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi being fined for disobeying the umpire. In match 13 of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, Nabi was found guilty of breaching ICC’s Code of Conduct.
As a result of the same, Nabi has been fined 15 percent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. Additionally, Nabi has also been handed one demerit point, which is his first in a 24-month period. As per the statement issued by ICC, “Nabi was found to have breached Article 2.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “Disobeying an Umpire’s instruction during an International Match.”
Notably, the incident occurred at the start of the 14th over of Afghanistan’s innings. Nabi was seen engaging in a prolonged argument with the on-field umpires over Protean pacer Lungi Ngidi’s wristband. Speaking of the Level 1 breaches, such offences carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of the player’s match fee and one or two demerit points.
Afghanistan look to avenge twin defeats in game against
Speaking of the Afghan Atalans, they are placed in Group D alongside South Africa, New Zealand, UAE and Canada for the T20 World Cup 2026. Known for some notable upsets, Afghanistan are yet to win a game as they lost to New Zealand by five-wicket margin in their opener and then went down against South Africa in a double Super Over.
With two defeats in as many games, the Afghanistan side are placed third in the Group D standings and will next look to come out victorious as they take on UAE on February 16 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
