In a massive 232-run chase, Quinton de Kock set the tone with a blazing knock of 35-ball 65. While Reeza Hendricks fell early, Dewald Brevis and De Kock added 51 runs off 23 balls. But that was the end of South Africa’s story.
From 120/1, South Africa were reduced to 135/5 in a span of four overs. Brevis (31 off 17) followed De Kock back and the wickets kept falling. Varun Chakaravarthy bagged 4/53 while Jasprit Bumrah ended up with 2/17 in his four.
Earlier, the new pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson started the proceedings well and scored 67/1 at the end of the powerplay. Sanju Samson scored a brisk 37 on return to the opening spot while Abhishek hammered 37 off 22. With Suryakumar Yadav failing once again, Hardik Pandya took charge. He hammered a 16-ball 50, the second fastest in T20I for India after Yuvraj Singh. Tilak Varma continued his dominance against South Africa, scoring a 42-ball 73, helping India post 231/5. South Africa opted to bowl after winning the toss. Shubman Gill missed out on the IND vs SA 5th T20 due to a foot injury.
