Being a selector for the Indian team is a thankless job. If the selection is good, it a regular day at the office, and if the selection doesn’t go as per plan, there is always criticism. On Saturday, the BCCI announced the team for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026, that threw two major surprises.
Ajit Agarkar gets 10/10
Shubman Gill was axed from the team, while keeper-batter Ishan Kishan was given the nod ahead of Jitesh Sharma. While the fans might have their opinions on how the selection was, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has commended Ajit Agarkar and his team for the great calls.
Good decision to get Rinku Singh
On JioStar’s Follow the Blues, he said, “I give chief selector Ajit Agarkar and the management 10 out of 10. It must have been tough to leave out Shubman Gill, but it is not the end for him in T20s. The team combination was the priority.” Bhajji also lauded the selectors for the inclusion of Ishan and Rinku Singh in the team.
“I am very happy Rinku Singh is in the team, and Ishan Kishan has also returned. We spoke about him being in contention, and he got a spot. He is in good form. They did not take Jitesh Sharma because they already have enough batters for number seven or eight,” he opined.
Further Bhajji explained, why a powerful hitter at the top of the order is needed. “With Gill out, you need a powerful hitter at the top who can also keep wicket, so these two changes are good. Having Axar Patel as vice-captain is a very good decision. Overall, they have done a very good job. I hope the team plays well and wins the cup.”
