The unexpected happened as India announced their squad for the T20 World Cup 2026. Shreyas Iyer has been backed to make his T20I comeback and potentially replace Suryakumar Yadav. Virat Kohli has commenced training for his Delhi comeback.

Samson picked over Gill
Shubman Gill has been excluded from India’s squad for the T20 World Cup. Having featured against South Africa as the vice-captain, Gill has been dropped. Ajit Agarkar clarified that the 26-year-old was omitted to ensure a keeper plays up top. Later, it was revealed that Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav had decided to go ahead with Sanju Samson on December 17.

Ishan Kishan comeback
In a surprising turn of events, Jitesh Sharma has been dropped. Given that Samson will open, the selectors have brought Rinku Singh into the team as the finisher. Instead of Jitesh, Ishan Kishan will be the backup keeper. Kishan hasn’t played for India since November 2023 and doesn’t have a central contract.

Shreyas Iyer back in T20Is?
In an exclusive conversation with InsideSport, Robin Uthappa picked Shreyas Iyer as the batter he’d want to represent India in T20I cricket after the T20 World Cup. The former Indian cricketer thinks Shreyas could be the perfect man to take over from Suryakumar Yadav as India’s captain if the selectors don’t wish to continue with him.

Virat Kohli has started preparations for the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy. The modern great has been included in Delhi’s 19-man squad and will play List A for his state team for the first time since February 2010. Kohli was practicing in Alibaug, just 4 days before the match against Andhra.

Shami & Samson to play VHT
Mohammed Shami and Sanju Samson will play for Bengal and Kerala in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Shami and Samson are expected to be available for the entire tournament. Samson won’t be leading Kerala and will play under Rohan Kunnummal. Other big names like Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant will also play.

Agarkar gets 10/10
Agarkar and the Indian management have aced it. That’s what Harbhajan Singh thinks about India’s squad for the T20 World Cup. The former Indian spinner lauded them for taking the tough decision to drop Shubman Gill. Bhajji rated the selections 10/10 and welcomed the inclusion of Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh.
