India’s Manchester campaign hit another roadblock as Sai Sudharsan confirmed that Rishabh Pant was taken to hospital for scans after suffering a foot injury during the fourth Test. The vice-captain, who had looked fluent during his stay at the crease, was retired hurt after being struck on the right foot by a Chris Woakes delivery.
Pant, in his usual manner, tried an audacious reverse scoop shot against the fast bowler. However, he only managed to get a slight inside edge off the bat and the ball hit straight on his right foot. Instantly, Pant hobbled. While he survived a genuine LBW scare, it cost him his stay at the crease. He couldn’t walk and was eventually carried out of the ground via stretcher.
Sudharsan: “He’s in a lot of pain”
Speaking after the close of play, debutant Sai Sudharsan revealed the seriousness of Pant’s condition. Sudharsan was at the other end when Pant’s injury occurred.
“He was in a lot of pain definitely, but they’ve gone for scans. We’ll get to know overnight, probably get the information tomorrow,” Sudharsan spoke at post-day press conference. “We’ll know about the update probably soon. Obviously (it will be a big miss if he’s ruled out), because he was batting really well today as well. Plus, we’ll miss a batter if he doesn’t come back again. So, it will definitely have consequences. But at the same time, the batters who are batting right now and there are a few more all-rounders inside.”
Pant’s injury came at a time when India were stabilising their innings following a post-lunch collapse. His 72-run stand with Sudharsan had helped blunt England’s momentum before he was floored attempting a highly risky shot.
England cautious, but admit Pant may not return
Even the England camp sensed the potential magnitude of the injury. Bowling all-rounder Liam Dawson, who also made his return to Test cricket in this match, offered his thoughts at the press conference. According to him, Pant’s won’t be able to participate in the match anymore. Which means India will be one batter short, certainly a huge advantage for the hosts.
“Hopefully, it’s not that serious, but I don’t think he’s taking part in this match any more.”
Pant was helped off the field and immediately taken for scans, amping up doubts over both his batting and keeping duties for the remainder of the match. Should he not return, India would be a batter short and likely call upon Dhruv Jurel as the substitute wicketkeeper.
