After starting off their T20 World Cup campaign on a high note with a 67-run win against Ireland, Australia suffered two back-to-back setbacks

Australia cricket team have become the latest side to be knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2026. This comes after the game between Zimbabwe and Ireland at the Pallekele Stadium in Kandy was abandoned without a ball being bowled, which means ZIM become the 7th side to seal their spot in the Super 8 stage. Australia had kept their fingers crossed, and were hoping for Ireland to beat Zimbabwe in order to give them a chance of staying alive in the tournament. However, the weather gods had other plans.

Australia out of T20 World Cup 2026

After starting off their T20 World Cup campaign on a high note with a 67-run win against Ireland, Australia suffered two back-to-back setbacks, which all but confirmed their exit from the tournament. First, they were handed a shocking 23-run defeat at the hands of Zimbabwe. They were then beaten by Sri Lanka by 8 wickets, which pretty much sealed their fate.

In order to stand a chance of qualifying for the Super 8, Australia needed Ireland to beat Zimbabwe on Tuesday. This would have ensured that if Australia beat Oman by a good margin in the final league stage game, then they could pip Sikandar Raza and co. to make it to the next stage. However, incessant rain in Kandy sealed Australia’s fate as the ZIM vs IRE tie was washed out.

Australia will be extremely disappointed with their performance in the T20 World Cup. They were without their star players like Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins among others. Mitchell Marsh missed the first two games due to an internal testicular bleeding, which turned out to be costly for the Aussies. A poor performance against ZIM and SL with the ball was all it took for them to be knocked out of the tournament.
