All-rounder Washington Sundar justifies spot over Kuldeep Yadav, scores maiden Test century

Washington Sundar has gone past the 50-run mark 5 times and three of them have come in SENA countries.

Washington Sundar has finally scored his maiden Test century. After getting stuck at 96 against England in 2021 at Ahmedabad, the all-rounder has finally gotten the elusive milestone to his name. The Manchester Test was going into England’s lap even after KL Rahul and Shubman Gill’s vigil.

But staunch resistance from Washington and Ravindra Jadeja has kept England at bay and India in contention to level the series at The Oval.

Washington Sundar Bails India Out of Trouble

He came in at a time when India had lost two wickets—KL Rahul for 90 and then skipper Shubman Gill for 103. But Washington looked like a man on a mission. He blocked everything that came his way and looked in no hurry. What helped him from the other end was that even Jadeja looked pretty assured at the crease.

That meant no unnecessary risks were taken, as Washi struck his first fifty in Tests since December 2024, when he scored one in the Melbourne Test against Australia. In short, this fifty came after eight innings for the southpaw, who is constantly under pressure to justify his position in the Test team.

Maiden Test hundred

Washington continued to play the ball on its merit. Draw was the only thing on his mind. But after Ben Stokes asked India to shake hands and end the match, he really let it loose. In the 140th over, Washington struck three consecutive boundaries to enter the 90s.

Jadeja also scored a hundred, but Washi had to wait a couple of overs. In the 143rd over, he hit a boundary over covers and then took a double on the leg side to bring up his maiden Test hundred. And what better time to do it?
