The WR-32 Indian women’s doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa prevailed over the top-seed Japanese team of Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota in the semis of the Syed Modi International on Saturday. This means that the Tanisha-Ashwini pair has made it to the final of the coveted event after the Japanese pair conceded the match in the first game itself, after Hirota injured herself.
At the time the Japanese player got injured, they were leading 11-10 in the first game. Now Tanisha-Ashwini will face another Japanese pair, and the WR-15 team of Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi in the final on Sunday. In the previous round, the duo had beaten another Indian pair, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand 21-19, 21-8.

On the other hand, the only Indian men’s singles shuttler in the fray, Priyanshu Rajawat lost his semis match against lower-ranked Chi YJ 21-18, 14-21, 17-21. Before his loss, all the other Indians had crashed in the first round itself, without showing any fight. Kidambi Srikanth lost to Lee CH of Chinese Taipei, and B Sai Praneeth lost to Kenta Nishimoto in straight games. Similarly in the women’s singles, Aakarshi Kashyap, Malvika Bansod, and Tasnim Mir lost in the first round.
