SAI issues Asian Games media advisory for Indian contingent, asked to avoid political statements – Report

The Asian Games media advisory must have come into place to avoid any controversy at the Games.

As the Indian athletes get ready to take part in the Asian Games 2023, an advisory has been issued to the entire contingent, to not take part in any media-related emergencies, or make any inaccurate statements. As per a report in the Times of India, the Sports Authority of India has come up with an Asian Games media advisory for the athletes’ code of conduct in Hangzhou, China.

The 39-page playbook, known as the ‘Informational Module’, has been handed out to the athletes. The playbook is divided into three sections. ‘Getting ready for Hangzhou’, ‘Just don’t Dope’, and ‘Press & Media’. As the names suggest, the first section will have information regarding travel prep, venue, weather, transportation, and communication challenges.

There will also be Mandarin pronunciation guidelines, doping awareness, and media-related services for players. The report further suggests that the Asian Games 2023-bound athletes have been warned against coming up with undesirable behaviour. That includes inappropriate actions in front of the media, and using social media for voicing grievances and opinions.

Not just that. The athletes have been media-trained and informed on how to respond to political and social questions. They have also been advised to keep the focus on sports at all times. It seems, the athletes have been made to realise that they’ll be representing the country abroad, and need to be mindful of certain sensitive aspects.
