Kartik & Gulveer Singh get lucky medals in men’s 10000m as leaders tumble close to finish line

Earlier on Friday, Kiran Baliyan had won a bronze medal at the Asian Games women's shot put event.

In what can be described as lucky medals for India, the duo of Kartik Kumar and Gulveer Singh won silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 10000m at the Asian Games on Saturday. The duo shattered their personal bests along the way to win medals in the category, at the Games, after 1998. Gulab Chand had won a bronze in that edition for India.

Kartik won the silver with a timing of 28:15.38s while Gulveer clocked 28:17.21s to claim the bronze. Both the Indians sneaked into medal contention in the last 100 metres after three of the fellow competitors fell in succession after bumping into each other. Meanwhile, Birhanu Yemataw Balew of Bahrain won the gold medal with a timing of 28:13.62 seconds.

In other athletics action, Indian athlete Aishwarya Mishra clocked 53.50s in the women’s 400m final to finish fourth. The 26-year-old sprinter was 0.92s shy of a bronze medal in the final event. Bahrain’s Oluwakemi Mujidat Adekoya and Salwa Eid Naser won gold and silver, respectively, while Malaysian sprinter Vallabouy Shereen Samson settled for bronze. In the men’s category, Muhammed Ajmal finished fifth by clocking 45.97s.
