IOC vs IOA: The relation between the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is getting sour with every passing day. It did not take much time for the IOA to respond to the suspension threat issued by the IOC. The IOA’s acting president Anil Khanna wrote back to the IOC, stating that the warning was out of line, adding that it is a premature warning as well. The IOC letter was marked to all the executive members of the IOA and the Indian body also decided to act promptly. It was the acting president of Khanna, who take the matter of writing back to the international body.
However, it is important to understand about the reasons behind the IOC warning. In short, IOC could be possibly be facing a ban if the dates of the elections are not finalised. They also need to hold an executive council meeting.
“What I, however, find a little out of line, is a premature warning of suspension without having been given a reasonable opportunity by the lOC/OCA to the lOA.” The Times of India quoted Khanna in his letter to IOC’s Director of Olympic Solidarity and National Olympic Committee Relations, James MacLeod, and Director General of the OCA, Husain AlMusallam.
The letter also stated that before threatening them with suspension, the IOC and Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) should have spoken to them. “IOA has been requesting for a meeting with your good selves repeatedly, to draw out the timelines to address the concerns of lOC/OCA. We are hopeful that you will kindly give us this opportunity.”

It is interesting to note how seriously will the letter written by the IOC be taken with the international body not having officially acknowledged the appointment of Khanna in his current role. Khanna took over the role of acting president last month.

In fact, it was done after the Delhi High Court ordered that Narinder Batra cannot function as the IOA president. Before his appointment, Khanna was serving as senior vice-president of the IOA. Khanna also tried to explain his new appointment to the IOC.
“As a consequence of the vacancy which arose on Dr (Narendra) Batra’s demitting the office of president, IOA, the honourable high Court of Delhi confirmed my appointment as the acting/interim president of IOA, in accordance with the law of the land and the constitution of IOA as approved by the IOC,” the letter further stated.
