South Africa's fielding coach Wandile Gwavu had to come on the field to rescue Proteas as they did not have a substitute.

Bizarre! South Africa’s fielding coach Wandile Gwavu was seen on the field as a substitute fielder during the New Zealand vs South Africa ODI match at Gaddafi Stadium. This is not the first time an SA coach has stepped in as a player; their batting coach, JP Duminy, also fielded for the team in 2024.

Fielding coach Wandile Gwavu comes for rescue

Fans were surprised to see Wandile on the field as a substitute fielder. He stepped in as no South African player was available for the role. According to ICC rules, a coach can act as a fielding substitute if no other player is available as a stand-in.

South Africa lost the match

South Africa lost the game by six wickets with New Zealand’s Kane Williamson impressive knock of unbeaten 133. Kiwis will be a happy camp with their most of the bracket got checked in the match with their key players like Williamson and Devon Conway playing winning knocks.
