This move paves way for youngsters like Gill to fill the spot and showcase their mark. Though originally an opener, Gill can be a good fix in the one-down order.
Skipper Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are the fixed openers in the Indian test batting lineup. Mayank Sharma is the opening backup player in the squad. With Rahul missing this test series, Sharma will be filling in the opening spot alongside Sharma who will be making his test captaincy debut.

Shubman Gill who made his test debut in 2020 in Australia is a fine batter and is set to carry the game forward towards the new generation. Shubman can be a good fit after having already established himself in the middle order by smashing a double against West Indies A in West Indies.
