In an exclusive conversation with InsideSport, Mr. Junichi Taya, General Producer of eFootball™, shared insights into KONAMI’s growing focus on the Indian market through culturally resonant campaigns like the Diwali and Independence Day celebrations. The discussion highlighted how eFootball™ aims to blend local traditions with global gaming experiences, featuring national icons like Sunil Chhetri and introducing regionally inspired in-game content such as Santanu Hazarika’s specially designed jerseys.

Mr. Taya also revealed details about fan-favorite features like Treasure Link and teased upcoming collaborations and localized initiatives that promise to strengthen eFootball™’s connection with Indian players in 2026 and beyond.

Junichi Taya on eFootball™ Diwali and Independence Day

What was the core vision behind launching the Diwali and Independence Day campaigns for eFootball™ in India, and how do they align with KONAMI’s global strategy?

Our basic policy is to respect each country’s culture and create opportunities in-game where everyone can celebrate together, aligning with important festivals around the world. In India, we determined that Independence Day and Diwali—both of which hold strong national significance—are the most appropriate occasions. Our aim is to launch campaigns that foster pride and joy, bringing the community together as one. Within our global strategy, these localized initiatives are positioned as a key pillar, connecting significant national moments with the eFootball™ experience in each country.

Sunil Chhetri was featured prominently this year with his own in-game card and Diwali campaigns. What were the main factors behind choosing Sunil Chhetri for this collaboration?

Sunil Chhetri is a symbol of Indian football, having supported fans and the Indian football community for many years with his dedication, outstanding achievements, and leadership. We chose him without hesitation because we believe Indian users can instantly relate to him as a national icon. For Diwali, we prepared a special card and 3D model of Chhetri in eFootball™—not only to honor his accomplishments, but also to provide Indian fans with a truly special experience.

How has the response been so far for the Diwali and Independence Day eFootball™ campaigns from both the Indian gaming community and mainstream sports fans?

The response exceeded our expectations. The in-game campaigns for Independence Day and Diwali attracted a large number of players nationwide, Independence Day and Diwali received large number of participation from players across India, ranging from seasoned gamers to casual sports fans discovering eFootball™ for the first time.

Tournament participation and enthusiasm were also fantastic, and the eFootball™ India Discord became a lively hub for community interaction. Most importantly, the feedback from the community was extremely valuable, providing us with great insights to make future campaigns even more engaging and immersive.

Could you tell us about the creative process and inspiration behind the special ‘Santanu’ and Diwali jerseys — their design, symbolism, and what they mean to Indian eFootball™ fans?

We were immediately drawn to the concept that Santanu first shared. The uniform inspired by Assam’s traditional textiles clearly symbolizes respect, pride, and unity, while also shining a spotlight on Northeast India, where football is very popular. The Diwali jersey is themed around the “Festival of Lights,” incorporating diya (lamps) and rangoli patterns to convey warmth, festivity, and togetherness through its design. We were particular about the use of color and texture, so that players truly feel like they are “wearing the festival” in-game.

Tell us more about the upcoming Treasure Links

Treasure Link is a popular eFootball™ feature that lets players experience “new discoveries” and “community connection” the more they play. It was first launched in July–August 2025 and received an enthusiastic response. Based on your feedback, it will return in January 2026. Additionally, attendees at the Meet & Greet event in Mumbai this December will receive a special Treasure Link card as a gift—our way of thanking the passionate support from the Indian community. What future collaborations, features, or localizations can Indian eFootball™ players look forward to in 2026 and beyond?

Our journey in India so far has been nothing short of inspiring. The positive response to our campaigns and collaborations has reaffirmed our belief that Indian fans are among the most passionate in the world.

Going forward, KONAMI is keen on exploring more partnerships with Indian gamers, athletes, and cultural icons. Expect more localized content, exciting collaborations, and community-driven campaigns that reflect India’s unique identity and energy. While all of this is in the pipeline, one thing’s certain, the future of eFootball™ in India is bright, and we can’t wait to build it together with the fans.

We will continue to expand our initiatives for India. This includes new collaborations with local players, footballers, and cultural icons, as well as in-game content such as limited edition cards and uniforms that reflect India’s unique culture. We will also keep hosting special events, esports tournaments, and Meet & Greet sessions. In addition, we will roll out community-driven campaigns together with our players.
