Epic Games announces over 1,000 layoffs as Fortnite engagement drops by 29%. CEO Tim Sweeney outlines a $500M cost-cutting plan.

The gaming giant behind the highly successful Fortnite and Unreal Engine, Epic Games, has announced a massive restructuring phase, according to an official announcement made by the CEO, Tim Sweeney, in an internal memo to the company’s employees. It was confirmed in official announcement that Epic Games is laying off over 1,000 employees. After this move, many fans were surprised but we should also understand that it represents a new trend in the gaming industry.

Epic Games is Cutting 1000 Jobs Over Low Fortnite Engagement

For a while now, Epic Games has been in a period of hyper-expansion, and all of this can be attributed to the unprecedented success of Fortnite. However, as revealed by Tim Sweeney, the company’s current spending exceeds its revenue.

The main cause for this financial burden on the company is the “downturn in Fortnite engagement,” which began in 2025.

Fortnite may be a household name, but data from within the company reveals that there was a “29% decline in playtime over the last year.” This may be an indication that the “metaverse” approach, which saw the expansion of the game to sub-modes such as racing and music, may have worked against the company, as the main battle royale experience may have lost some of its original luster.

The layoffs are a part of a larger plan to save around $500 million. In order to do this, Epic is not only laying off people but also streamlining their focus. There are several experimental modes, like Rocket Racing and Festival Battle Stage, that are being sunsetted.

This is a clear sign that Epic is moving away from being an “everything app” and getting back to their roots. By focusing on their main projects like Unreal Engine 6 and the main Fortnite experience, they hope to get their spark back and become financially secure again.
