On Tuesday, Nigeria took on arch-rivals Ghana at their home turf, with a ticket to Qatar being on the line. The first leg meeting ended 0-0, and Ghana struck first in this particular clash, through a 10th-minute strike from Thomas Partey. William Troost-Ekong equalized for Nigeria from the penalty spot twelve minutes later, and while the game ended 1-1 in aggregate, Ghana defeated Nigeria by virtue of away goals scored.
The team getting knocked out of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers angered the Nigerian loyalists, who stormed onto the pitch and made an absolute wreckage – destroying the dugouts and throwing tear gas into the pitch.
Police tried to intervene but the matter escalated quickly, as the Nigerian fanbase also targeted the visiting team. The Ghanian fans had to be evacuated from the ground by the authorities, whilst the players were pelted with bottles.
While this incident is not something Ghanian fans and players would want to remember, the night itself was a memorable one as the team qualified for the World Cup after eight years. On the other hand, Nigeria will now aim for a major overhaul, so as to not make the same mistakes four years down the line.
